TayLee is right about using an artists, non shedding eraser for stains. You can also use another piece of suede as a cleaner, too, by just rubbing it on the stain.
Shoe repair stores sell suede cleaners and little suede brushes for more serious stains and for over-all brightening as the suede becomes dirty. Leather furniture stores have a foam cleaner that is more efficient for all over cleaning and it doesn't damage the grain or make it stiff.
To make it smell better, sprinkle borax or baking soda on it, but take off the cushions, treat both sides and the base underneath. Leave it on there as long as possible, then vacuum it off.
Should you choose to use a protectorant, you will find that the ones sold in stores specializing in leather and suede furniture are more economical than those found in shoe stores and are formulated differently. Shoes do not have the constant rubbing of different fabrics as furniture does and the forumlations for furniture will protect the couch from garment dye transfer, sweat, body oils and perfumes that shoe store formulation won't. (But, they do protect against salt staining from winter application should that be a concern
