I read another post about painting wooden cabinets, so I get the overall method....sand so the paint can adhere, prime, and paint.
My questions are: 1) do I just use a primer that you would use on your interior walls? 2) do I use interior paint or is there a special wood paint? 3) for a dining room table, should I go with gloss, semi-gloss, or something else? 4) what can I do to make it look more antique? I want it to look like an old farmhouse table.
An antique white would look lovely. you are correct on your procedures as to how to paint it. Sand real well first and use a Kilz Primer and then sand lightly "again". Kilz Primer is used on Wood and SheetRock alot because it will cover any imperfections and Stains that may be on the Surface. you can buy refinishing Kits for your Dining Room Furniture at Lowes. I used a Crackle Finish on mine and it turned out Lovely. if you do not want alot of shine on your Table, stick with the Semi-Gloss Finish.
I repainted a bookshelve not long ago and just used a regular primer and semi gloss interior paint. It turned out fine.
I watched a show where they made a trunk look antique by "distressing" it. The took a chain and beat the hell out of it before painting putting dents and scratches in it. It looked really good after they were done. Hope I helped.
Great question. I do a lot of home DIY'ers. I wouldnt go very glossy on the paint. most worn paint has lost its luster with time. so if a dated look is what your looking for i would go matte. To get the wear on the paint take a fine grain sand paper and run it over the corners (if any) and around the feet of the table. The more you rub the more aged it looks. you may also want to sand it down before you paint to wear down any sharp corners. thats a tell tale sign of an aged piece as well. Good luck. And dont forget, if you dont like it you can always try again. =)
antique white really looks almost beige,
white wont look pretty , for that ancient look mahogany or light beige
I want to paint our wooden dining room table "antique" white...?
